Subject: Grinding / cracking corn...again

Northeast Missouri
Discussed many times on NAT I think, but looking for suggestions..

Trying to grind corn for a few fats we're feeding. Usually grind ear corn through a 1/2" screen but grinding shelled corn now.

Last batch I tried grinding with no screen and of course got a fair bit of shelled corn (maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the mix) but the ground portion was still finer than I want.

So should I still try without a screen but running the tractor slow? Or use a screen but run tractor slow? (Cattle won't be here much longer, so I don't have many batches left to grind, for experimenting very much.)

Another question: anybody try grinding ear corn without a screen? Is that hard on the grinder?...I'm thinking of the auger at the bottom of the hammer mill that takes the feed to the mixer, getting slammed with whole ear chunks at high speed.
