Around here the absolute best ground is former crop ground. You can’t skimp on fertilizer and grow corn or beans. More than a couple times I’ve been on the crop farmer end of what you are describing. The new tenant that bales hay for a couple years have told me I must have poured the fertilizer on that ground. Then after three or four years of no fertilizer and hay yields down to almost nothing the landlord comes back and asks me if I want to rent his place cause things just aren’t working out share cropping hay with his new tenant.
