Subject: Fertilizing Rented Pasture

Picked up a good size rented pasture last year. It is crop ground that was converted and fenced because of the owners preference in MI.

It was planted with a pasture/hay mix but is primarily orchard grass with some alfalfa and clover. Was a pretty good stand last year but I didn't end up grazing it much. Planning to hit it hard this year but it has been slow to green up so far due to the cover of last years growth dormant on top.

Long story short I am considering soil testing and adding fertilizer this year as it was crop ground and has had none since planting grass.

Anyone have thoughts on fertilizing rented pasture? I will be hiring the local elevator to come do it so it’s not cheap and not sure how to negotiate payment with the owner.. It is a longer term lease if that makes a difference on suggestions.
