S Illinois | Easy to placate special interest groups if a politician or authoritarian can say look what I did for. you. No one advocates for the consumer but plenty of special interests advocate for themselves. Hence things like sugar protection in the US. With consumers and the consumeristic lifestyle being unimportant or unknown to many in the world, what they don't know doesn't hurt them. So a leader or legislators can say look at we are doing to keep your job in country. No one ever says, look at the cost the consumer has to pay to finance that.
The question one must ask if a little tariff is good, why are even higher tariffs not preferred. If the trade deficit is an issue and a sign of weakness/being taken advantage of, would a trade surplus not be advantageous and a sign of strength. And if so why not prevent all imports. Would that not mean that one argument that some use-the US finances other countries through the trade deficit become mute and make the US even stronger? | |
