My first job out of high school was working in a job shop running a mechanical clutch, foot trip punchpress w/ cable pull out safety system. The operator attached a wrist strap to each hand, it's attached to a steel cable that ran thru a framework and series of pulleys and bolted to the ram at the back of the press. When the ram got tripped, it pulled the cable which pulled your hands out of the die (if you left it in harm's way). If you had a ring on and it caught on some part of the die, then the cable would pull your wrist away from whatever part of your hand was caught in the die, hopefully saving part of your hand from getting crushed. Most of those old mechanical punch presses have been melted into scrap by now thankfully. The shop work rules stated no rings, or other jewelry allowed (no gold chains, etc ) and required safety glasses, leather shoes, and denim pants. It was always weird when some new guy showed up to work on his first day and refused to take off his bling, so the foreman would explain the rules, give him a choice, and then when he wouldn't comply, they'd walk him out the door. (I guess the job wasn't very important) I think farming is one of the few occupations that has a higher risk of injury than manufacturing jobs like running punch presses. I worked with a few guys that had a hook on one hand (corn picker got them). Farming is still dangerous, stay vigilant and don't cut corners on safety.
