The first year we grew cereal rye we let it head out and die naturally on part of the field. I think the rest we terminated at boot stage.
Due to a long period of heavy rain after planting we had to go in and replant areas on both parts, so not sure if yield results would have been valid.
I do not remember a lot of difference in weed control.
However we got rye seed in the soybeans at harvest.
Fortunately we sold those soybeans for seed beans and the seed cleaner had no trouble cleaning the rye out.
