Iowa | Every area is different and I have read that most land is purchased by farmers too.
However, I'm not seeing that here in my area. I'm close enough to Des Moines there seems to be a sizeable amount of 1031 money along with a chunk of other people that made their money outside of actively farming but want to own farmland.
I watched a land sale online a few weeks ago. The farms sold well but at the end of the sale the auctioneer stated to the crowd he had a group of interested parties looking for farm ground (1031 money) and that he also had a handful of farmers interested in sale-leasebacks. I saw the first sale-leaseback take place in several years last summer in my general area. Not always- but generally this is a sign of needing to generate some cash in my opinion.
I think there are both extremes throughout the country side. People in a good position to buy the neighboring farm if it becomes available and others that are or will have to be looking at making some hard choices going forward if things don't change for them.
