...the same as cloud-based software, or maybe even a bit better. (If you end your cloud subscription, all access to old data is ended in most cases.)

I tell people not to get too giddy with the idea of going entirely paperless--attaching receipt images to transactions and throwing away the paper originals. If you switch to different software someday you lose access to all that effort you put into scanning or taking photos of receipts.

Selling software by subscription was so successful 
for software sellers (much higher annual income) that most of the major desktop applications have gone the same route. I'm afraid the cat is out of the bag on that approach and it is here to stay.




If a person understands double entry accounting there are free alternatives, such as turbocash. No payroll component here, but it works well for basic accounting.
