I know these structures are “all the rage” in flyover country, but the niceness seems to be getting better than the typical ranch style home.
The old argument was how much cheaper they can be built but I’m not convinced of that anymore. Any recent real-world numbers of recent builds out there?
We built one in 2021/2022, not shop attached, just an oversized attached garage. We had the exterior work done by a contractor (framed, sheeted, and the roof done), and we did the majority of everything else construction wise(siding, window and door installation, insulation, cabinet install, flooring minus carpet). It cheapened things up, and we didn't use cheap finishes. I think we are 60' x 44' single story, large overhang porch, and then the garage is 40' x 45' or close to that, with two loop infloor heat, one for the house, one for the garage. I'd guess we are at $425-$450k total including cement, septic and leech field, and a new well. |
So how much cheaper can a Shouse or Barndominium be built vs a ranch home?
