I'd hate to have to pay labor bill to follow my cattle around and pick up afterbirth. What would that cost to travel 20,000+ acres? Anything a cow doesn't get, yotes have it gone in less than 24 hours. Never seen a cow or any domestic animal choke on one myself. Never rode up on a death from one. Guess it can happen just like lightning striking a cow or bull.
Only reason to pick one up is if it's a calving pen, building, etc. Plus my dog has to have a reason to bring one to front lawn for a dog chew, no way I'm paying for dog chews.
Honestly I don't think the good lord gave instructions to the Native Americans to follow the Buffalo around picking them up. LOL
I was 200 yards away feeding the rest of the herd baleage. I seen a cow by itself to my dumb self walking over is part of being a decent caretaker of my herd. So is ear tagging it and giving it newborn supplements. A wet snow was falling so I also wanted to make sure it wasn’t shaking. Shame on me for making the effort. I’ve had calves in similar weather and said yup they’ll be fine and lost them. You only get one calf a year from each cow so I try to make the most of it. |
