Subject: RE: International Tractors In The Cold

NW Iowa
I bought a 1086 in 1978 and I still have it as a loader tractor with 18,000 electric tac hours. The first time I overhauled it the machine shop did a valve job without new seats. It started hard from the valves being dropped too low in the seats. I removed the head and had the machine shop put in new seats to get the valve up where they belong. It started much better in cold weather but it won't start without being plugged in at zero degrees, no way. If the temp is 20 it needs a little cranking to get it going. If the temp is 15 it needs a lot of cranking but the starter is in need of a good freshing up and it isn't cranking as lively as it should. (does anyone want to volunteer to remove that gawdawful located starter for me?) I haven't used ether on it for many years. My Deere 4650 has less than 1000 hours on an in frame with all new valves and seats. It starts about like the 1086 in cold weather. I use both tractors for snow removal but they are plugged in, the 1086 is on a timer so they aren't cold weather tested very often. What I don't like about cold starting the 4650 is it sits there chugging and smoking at full fuel till it catches up and settles back. Sometimes a quick pull and push of the kill button straightens it out but most time that trick makes it die.
