A preservative won't hurt. I read somewhere that used engine oil is not good for wood fibers but everyone who uses used oil has proved that wrong. I have used a preservative twice on a hay rack I made 8 years ago. Its plain old 2X12 lumber, nothing fancy like oak or ash but it still looks like new. maybe it hasn't had enough time to age? The last time I put on the preservative I didn't notice the can of preservative I got had a reddish-brown stain in it so now I can tell my hay rack from everyone else's by the color.
