Different farmers in my area used to work together at silage time. In order for it to work, the equipment had to be well maintained to limit breakdowns. Usually, one guy owned/maintained the chopping equipment and charged per acre to chop for other guys, they provided tractors and operators to pull wagons and fill silos or ag-bags. But small/mid sized dairy operations are almost gone here, and pull-type choppers and wagons are so expensive, it's not a viable option. The big chopper crews can do more acres in a good day with several semis hauling silage than smaller choppers did in a month. They work great for putting up silage in big bunkers and piles, not so good for silos and ag-bags (which were better suited for smaller livestock operations). Chopping silage and filling an ag-bag was a satisfying job, but it meant going full tilt to get done as fast as possible so the bagger was available for the next guy to rent it.
