| I had a field of second year corn sustain considerable root worm damage this year. It was a Smartstax hybrid but the pressure was high enough that the traits couldn’t kill off the root worms before they did damage. The company agronomist came out and said the only thing that worked in situations like that was in furrow granular insecticide. Even the guys with nongmo corn were fine if they used insecticide.
Insecticide is cheaper than Fully traited corn and it seemed to work. This is an option worth consideration if you are trying to put together a budget that makes more sense. Seed is probably $80+/acre cheaper. It’s not for everyone.
