Does anyone have statistics on how many farmers actually want disaster payments and subsidies?

Chief Illiniwek - 12/23/2024 09:49 I’m not trying to offend you but this is exactly why guys in traditional corn areas don’t want subsidies. Subsidized crop insurance and blanket payments lead to corn being grown in places it has traditionally not been worth the risk.

Haha. I'm in a marginal area and I don't think the subsidies should exist (even subsidized crop insurance which my area basically lives on). My neighbors agree with me when I talk to them about it. Maybe they're just nodding and smiling though and are privately thinking, "this guy is off his rocker", haha. I do believe at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the local people I talk to about this very genuinely believe subsidies should not exist and if any one of them could flip a switch and make it go away for all farmers, they would do so, regardless of the temporary pain it would cause themselves.

I also believe:

  1. My area would grow the exact same amount of corn without payments like this $43 thing that seems to be happening
  2. My area would still grow quite a bit of corn even if the subsidy for crop insurance went away. This one would reduce production in my area but I think the extent to which it was reduced would be less than most people think
