Actually as far as corn being grown in areas where it was not grown before has more to do with today’s hybrids. For example Sw ND at one time hardly any corn was grown out there for grain now they can grow 100+ b/a with the right year. When they started growing it for grain they didn’t have any APH and the county yield was very low so no they didn’t start growing it for the subsidized crop insurance. They started growing it because the ROI on corn with today’s hybrids is better than any other crop traditionally grown there such as wheat. Soybeans have also moved out west I can remember going to Bismarck when I was young to play softball you hardly ever saw a bean field west of Jamestown now that is all you see in a rotation with wheat and corn.
