Tomball,Texas

pat-michigan - 12/22/2024 09:14 The rig mats we saw being used and being transported were pretty impressive to me anyway. I thought they looked like wood snow fence when roiled up- only built with (maybe) 8 X 8 timbers and cable. The drive back to the rig I referenced as well as the entire area around the rig was floating on those mats. Just intrigued me for some reason.

Some the old oil field hands I knew that are long gone simply called them board roads.3 layers of oak 2x8x16 nailed together by hand, they worked oilfield in the 50’s through the eighties.
I can remember late seventies riding with one of my grandpa’s truck drivers delivering pipe to a location and driving on a board road to the rig.
An old sawmiller that I bought some sawmill equipment from told about cutting hardwood for the oil companies to build board roads in the 70’s and early 80’s. Now with equipment to handle the big timbers they can throw a road down pretty quick.I only see the timber mats used on pipelines anymore, seems like nowadays if they’re drilling they build a rock road.
