Thumb of Michigan | This is old info, back in about 1981, and was gained on a afternoon beer cruise. So take it for what's its worth.
Van load of us were driving around outside of Houston one afternoon. Saw a Drilling rig off the road a ways, driveway and platform were wood. Can't recall what they called the mats they used, they were pretty neat. We decided to drive back and see what was up. Anyway, the rig was running 2 V 16 Cat generators. We timed it right, mechanic was changing oil and filters on one of them while it was running. All the filters were doubled up- he could turn a valve or two for each set of filters and it would bypass to the new ones. Change the old ones then. They had oil tank on stands like you might have to store diesel on the farm. He opened the drain on the bottom of the pan and started running new oil from the storage tank in on the top end. Had a sight gauge for oil capacity. When the oil started looking pretty new coming out the drain, he called it good.
Said that neither generator had been shut down for over a year. That kind of surprised me as I didn't know that drilling took that much time. I have no clue how deep they were then and how deep they were shooting for. And he could have every well been shining us on, we wouldn't have known.
Anyway, they were chasing fossil fuel using fossil fuel back then. Seems like they probably still do, but only a very uneducated guess. | |
