I'm surprised we don't see ads from the animal rescue organizations asking people to adopt (for a hefty fee) the old hens after their days of laying eggs comes to an end... Creating "petting" zoos only reinforces the view that all animals are pets. I don't recall any egg shortages in stores back when I was a kid, maybe they did occur.
