It worth noting that there is an exception in Iowa law that if 10% of the pen area is not under roof, it’s considered open lot. Some slat barns are being built with slats outside.
Regulation kicks in at 500 cattle for confinements and 1000hd for open lots. A lot of guys who never plan to go over 1000hd will build these “10% barns” as we call them.
