Parity is not an inflation calculation. It was instituted and calculated based upon the idea of what a “fair” price for farm products would be so that the average farmer could have the same living standard as their city cousins based upon what he could produce. The prices thrown around now don’t take into productivity gains.

People are quoting “parity” like it some grand calculation of what the real value of farm products should be. It’s not that at all. The only reason it’s a thing at all is because it was made a permanent piece of legislation and none of the farm bills since were made permanent. Also parity prices just happened to be based upon a time of high prices and the idea that they were the new norm.
