I went to listen to a talk by the late Gordon Hazzard quite a few years ago. He was from Mississippi and went over the country giving talks on raising stocker cattle. He said if you got sale barn calves going with less than 1% dead or chronic you got an A. He gave this talk in Calgary in February and the temperature was about 30 below. It was kind of amusing you could see when he was doing the presentation he was wondering how in hell did we keep cattle alive in that kind of weather.


I usually don’t have a problem with cold and death loss. It’s the temp swings that hit the calves hard. Going from -30 to 0C causes me problems. And Alberta would have all those problems. Here it’s usually a constant temp.
