Some of your death loss expense could be more properly 'Training Expense', yours. Try to be kind to yourself if you hit a bad patch.

If you are somewhat risk adverse and choose to test your skills on a single, small group, the 3% target may be mathematicly unattainable.

For example, you buy a pickup trailer load of 17 calves made up of 2-3 different lots from the sale barn. If you loose just one, death loss is a tick under 6%, lose 2 your over 11%. Well, this is the math on the one group.

My neighbor will buy 3 of these groups spread over 5-7 weeks. He loses 0-1 calf overall. He has over 20 years experience so overall he is under 3%.
