From what I have heard is the soil he farms is relatively coarse, and not what you would think would be a high yield soil. Also his whole farm average is a lot lower than one would think. So I don’t think he can rent ground on shares and magically produce an extra 100 bushels for the landowner.

ETA: I believe he draws out of the river for irrigation.


You’re correct about the soil. I have the same type for the most part.

It’s sandy but will pack hard as concrete. My CEC an average of 2.5 and soaks up water pretty good on my ground because everything is covered cropped.

He does have irrigation because Renwood Farms (David’s farm) is right next to the James River and he’s about an hour north of me. Our average rainfall is 55 inches a year but we still have long periods of no moisture so the sand I’m talking about turns dusty and hot pretty quick.
