I’ll take planting green over half dead or dead almost any day. Green planting lets us slice through better, and keeps moisture at a better level. When it’s brown dead the ground seems to stay wet longer, but we’re in an area with plenty of moisture in the spring normally. I would rather plant green into 12-18” tall rye than plant into 6” of dead rye
