I would kind of want to do it backwards of the way you did it last year. Ground going to corn - kill that grass cover crop early so as to not have to pay the carbon penalty. Soybeans - I am more inclined to kill grass cc later, closer to planting.
But...this is coming from someone who has seen a 50 bu corn yield penalty from the carbon penalty though.

We are going to try something a little different this year on some acres. We have a legume/ grass cover crop mix planted. Plan is to kill grass CC, strip till, and then let legume grow. Plant corn green (on strips) then roll legume after planting.
