Bone is made up of a protein matrix. In other words the structure of the bone is protein. When people think of bones they mostly think of calcium. But calcium is just the material that fills in the protein matrix.

Adequate protein in the diet is especially important as we age to help prevent weak bones. We do not absorb or utilize protein as well as an old person as young people do. That is why older peoples requirements are higher than young people, even though the youth are in a growth period of life.

At least that is my understanding based on the doctors and researchers I follow.
