Subject: RE: Trimble remote engage switch LED

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I want to be certain that you understand how most engage switches for auto steer work. With the systems I have owned, the engage switch is a momentary switch. By that I mean it is like a doorbell button that completes the circuit while you push the button but opens the circuit when the button is released.

With my Ag Leader systems, steering is engaged when the button is pushed.

With my Trimble systems, the operator pushes the button but steering does not engage until the operator releases the button. Trimble feels this is safer.

With either style, the switch must be a momentary type. If your switch is in fact a momentary, it can work for you but an LED would not be very useful. Generally the signal wire is 5VDC. Indicator LEDs are usually designed for 12VDC anyway.

Possibly you were thinking that the LED would act as an indicator that auto steer is engaged. This would not be the case. Generally there is some type of icon or indicator on the display that will inform you whether steering is engaged or not.

I would just get a simple momentary switch and connect it between the two proper terminals. Here's a picture of the switch I use in my combine.
