Athlete's Foot is a fungus that is also a type of ringworm.  It lives in the top layer of skin and is difficult for your body to attack it because of this.  I've had severe cases several times.  Once when I was just out of college and have no idea where I contracted it and another time about 13 years ago when I touched a cat with ringworm.  Both times I tried OTC treatments before ending up at a dermatologist for more powerful medications.  Treatments may include topical ointments, steroids such as prednisone, and antifungal medications use to treat yeast infections.  Both times I recall the doctors being adamant that I not quit treatment too so as the symptoms go away before the fungus is gone.

I'm scared to death to handle a cat I'm not familiar with. My last go-around with ringworm was awful.  Go to a doctor or dermatologist and don't screw around with it.
