Pittsburg, Kansas | There is probably some truth to that combined with a high carbohydrate diet. It does not appear to be true on a lower carb diet. Something about the salt in addition to the inflammation that high blood sugar spikes cause in the arteries. I don't remember the specifics.
High carb diets cause water retention. Water retention causes salt retention. Cut out a lot of the carbs the extra salt gets flushed out with the excess fluid via the urine.
Note the word "associated" or "linked" in the article. Epidemiology study. Can't determine causation.
