Back in the old days, before some of the handy tools we have now, I know there were farmers that would pick a spot that they thought was close. Then they would tie a flag to a tractor tire and drive to each edge while counting the revolutions. After the 4 measurements it was easy to calculate how far to adjust the centre stake.
