Thumb of Michigan | With your Ph, I'd plant something else for a year. Is it too late to plant wheat/rye in your area?
Lime needs some time to work IMHO. Getting it on now for certain would be my preference. Alfalfa likes Ph of 7 and you're a long way from that Ph.
If wheat (rye?) doesn't fit, then I would just keep it worked up until late summer/fall then plant. Wheat/rye could be taken as a hay crop, but............................................. this is another learning curve, with short window for cutting.
I know almost nothing about a cultimulcher or your soil type, so I don't know if you would compact the soil too much or if equipment would still keep working the soil up over time. BUT the more times you work it, the leveler/smoother it should be which can be a good thing.
If it was me, I'd get an old set of drags or field cultivator and keep it worked up all summer, what we use to call 'summer fallow'. The weeds get to sprout, then are destroyed same as grasses (gives you something to do every couple of weeks).
As mentioned, give the alfalfa seed the best possible environment to establish itself that you can. The seed isn't cheap HERE and it's a long-term crop. | |
