S Illinois | You had mentioned you feed cattle. How do you report yields and do you have a way to verify that bushel amount prior to feeding? Just wondering what sort of “error” you feel you have when reporting yields for crop insurance?
Personally my total bushels reported to crop insurance is normally 1% or less difference when finally hauled off as grain moisture by itself can change bushels. Don’t feed any cattle so all grain is ran across certified scales. But I also don’t go back to redo those reported yield number when finished hauling. Seeing that, I like to keep in mind that if my yield reporting is good, but can still have 0.5-1% error that same error applied to national yield is .9-1.8bu. So RMA data is great data but even that isn’t perfect. USDA needs to go back to reporting “ranges” like some of the reports had back in the 70’s and into the 80’s. So say report a national corn yield of 181.5-184 or whatever the data shows as say one standard deviation away. | |
