Thumb of Michigan | My GD shows pigs (I don't raise any more) and cattle (which I have, I call them GP's feedlot finest). She doesn't make money on the pigs but does win ribbons. With the beef, she might win a ribbon now and then, but usually makes money. I think the experience is the most valuable part.
One thing that comes to mind, is 'throttling' the pig. Why? IDK when your fair is (or where for that matter) so how long are you feeding this pig? And around here folks cut the pigs young (before weaning even), so I lost on the cutting of the pig too.
Lastly, (realizing I don't know your location) $1200 a ton is extremely high IMHO. I think commercial pig show feed is a lot less than that, from local feed mills to national companies like Purina. Especially with corn being the major ingredient, presently selling for less than $150 a ton (~$125 a ton HERE). | |
