NW Wisconsin | You have gotten a lot of good advice. As a retired dairy farmer who has raised a lot of alfalfa over the years, here is how I would approach.
Start with a soil test. Alfalfa needs a pH of 6.8 to 7. If not in that range, you will not get much of a long term stand. Lime takes some time to work, so find out if you need any and how much. Fall seeding can work fine after after a crop like oats or wheat, but Spring planting may need weed control with some chemical. Wouldn’t necessarily buy RR alfalfa, but it depends on current cropping history and weed pressure.
Alfalfa needs a lot of potash and if looking for a decent yield, plan on 2 applications yearly of 2-250# each time. Best advice is to have the landowners pay expenses and you custom farm it on shares.
