We still fill our 16x50 and 14x50 silos every year to finish our home raised calves. I will agree with others about chopping on the dryer side. Silage juice running out of the bottom third of the silo is not cool. 50-60% like others have suggested is good.

Keeping the silo fresh depends on the weather. In the summer, it takes more fed everyday to stay fresh vs the late fall, winter and spring.

They can be a pain in the neck, but make great feed.
