Sort of a complicated process, but here goes, and this is for 4X5 bales. Start by putting a long pole in the ground that is 12 feet above ground. Then a 2X8,10,12 about 10 feet long about 7 feet from the ground fastened to the pole. This gives the first stack something to lean against. Then put 3 pallets down spaced so 3 bales side by side sit on them with a log chain under them 1 foot from the pole. Stack bales 3, 2, 1 on pallets until you get to the length of the tarp, the biggest tarp is 80 feet, maybe. Under the last pallets, another log chain. The biggest tarp HF sells here will cover the stack side to side, but hang down just past the center of the bales on each side. The most important part is how the tarp is held down. I get lots of used, 1 gallon washer fluid jugs from work. I filled them with used antifreeze. They are tied up tight to each grommet. They hang in mid air keeping even, constant tension on the tarp. At each end a 2 inch ratchet strap goes over the tarp, is hooked to the chains, and pulled tight.

We could get 2-3 years out of a tarp. Even tension is the key. When hurricane Ike came through in 2008 we had 3 stacks under tarp. Our wind topped out at 79 MPH. 1 of them almost made it, but they all ultimately failed. We built another barn the next year, and another a few years after that.

I got some new, unused billboards after that and they were a big failure. In just a month or so, everywhere they flexed, the vinyl fell off and it was nothing but cheese cloth. 2 stacks were mostly rotten by the time we got around to feeding them.
