I saw menards increased their selection of SS pipe fittings, and thought that made a lot of sense, the material cost is reasonable, and they've gotten the manufacturing cost low enough to be competitive.

One method I've heard of is to lap the joint by tightening by hand back and forth with some abrasive, like a lapping compound, or clay/rust/grit. Keep working it tight and loose until it stops tightening any more, then clean, dry, lube/tape etc. and assemble.
