| Where in West Michigan are you? I’m located in Montcalm county. I spent a great deal of time researching the business. Around our area from what I can tell there are three legal drone spray operations (at least that advertise) so it’s still fairly new around us, so there’s still plenty of room for you. The FAA licensing is going to be the biggest hurdle and very time consuming, you’re looking at around six months minimum. You’d need to get licensing through MDARD as well. Pricing around here is $13/acre. There’s an airport in Lakeview where a lot of the planes fly out of which isn’t too far away so that’s why the pricing is that low. I talked to a couple Nutrien stores and they said they have more work than they can handle so they would get you work.
The reason I decided to put things on hold is because I have a good paying job right now and in order for me to not go backwards financially I’m guessing I’d need to fly about 20k acres a year and that’s not a risk I’m willing to take. If I were young, no kids, and not really established I’d jump on it!
Look up Flying Acres LLC, he flys, sells, and helps train, and helps with the licensing process. He’s usually looking for help as well so maybe you could work a summer with him to get your feet wet. Again, not sure where you’re located so maybe he’s a bit too far north for you to work for him but he should be able to help get you an idea what you’re looking for.
Good luck! | |
