Since your friend was into Italian food and drink, the anise/licorice flavored after-dinner drink is probably "Sambucha". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambuca
Sambuca in your coffee makes it a "cafe correcto."

It seems all Mediterranean countries have licorice-flavored liquor they favor. In Greece, it is Ouzo, and in South France, it is Pastische.
