Yes, they're an actual vaccine, an inactivated virus vaccine. There are single flu virus vaccines, trivalent, and quadravalent vaccines. The choice of influenza virus is made from looking at data from Australia/New Zealand/etc countries in our spring to determine what they think will be the most common strains of influenza when we get into our "flu season" of September to January or so.
