| MBGoat - 9/22/2024 20:26 I feel like that was a bad appraisal or there is more to the story, like planting at 50k or something. In our northern environment, 20" gives up yield unless population is pushed with a determinate ear type variety. At that point the extra seed cost and the fact that your row equipment is 50 percent more expensive any yield is completely given back in extra costs. Plus 20" is a pain to work on. The other bonus of 30" is it allows us to push for corn that is up to 3 days longer, due to the artificial heat units gained with less ground shadow on those June days that aren't getting anywhere close to 90 degrees.
Why would 20" give up yield when planted at the same population with all other variables being the same?
If you believe 30" rows allows you to plant longer hybrids why not go 38"-40" and get even more sun on the ground?
I feel like a lot of arguments made in favor or against a certain row width is made for whatever the person making the comment wants to be on. Not necessarily grounded in reality or real world experience. |
