My opinion here and no links to support this- - Yes, it is surprising how many people still cling to the old paradigm of high cholesterol foods cause high blood cholesterol. It is an easy association to make as a cause and effect. That's what got this all started back in the 60's. We've learned a lot more about that whole process through the years and how our body makes it's own cholesterol if we don't consume enough. Many body functions do depend on cholesterol. But it's harder to understand the complexity of all that, so many still like to think that high cholesterol foods cause high blood cholesterol and it's as easy as that, and that just isn't so.
As far as statins go- just because one has an elevated total cholesterol, does not automatically call for a statin. There are many risk factors to be considered with heart disease and we really have learned a lot about this disease through the years and better ways to manage it. Statins have their place and purpose. And I'm sure we will continue to learn more about this as the years and new research advance.
