Thumb of Michigan
We used to make cider, using my grandparents press and grinder (grinder was replaced by a electric one after a few years). The press was the same one we used for making homemade sausage, too.

As far as cider goes, I'm a Macintosh apple fan, with a few pears tossed in. A blend of some sort of different apples seems to be better than just one variety, IMHO. Red Delicious I didn't care for, because of a couple of things, dry (hardly any juice) and lack of favor. Mac's are juicy but more tart than some folks care for (hence the pears).

Now, if you're a fisherman, toss that pile of leftover stuff in the garden for a week or so and you'll have all the nightcrawlers your heart desires on the bottom of the pile. Note: they will be almost white in color.
