I haven't read all the replies, but here is my take.

I would not allow my kids to quit any activity in the middle of it - except football. I'd rather they not play football in the first place. So if they weren't enjoying it, I would allow them to quit under a few circumstances. They'd have to have the balls to have the conversation with the coach on their own, and they are going to be filling that time with some other type of commitment, not just free time. Maybe it would be an option to switch to being a manager/waterboy or something so he's still involved with the team and isn't completely out of the commitment he made, but he isn't playing.

I just don't think it is worth risking serious injury to teach him a lesson about commitment in this case. There are plenty of other ways to learn about sticking with commitments. I know multiple guys, as most of you do, with nagging injuries due to high school football.

I have a son in 7th grade. They start playing tackle football in 2nd or 3rd grade here - way too young. We told him he could start playing in Jr high, so this year he's playing. There is absolutely no way he'd admit it to me if he wasn't loving it - but I'm afraid he is. Our 2nd grader doesn't seem to care about football at this point. We shall see.
