Pittsburg, Kansas | Kudos to her doctor.
A very wise decision, in my humble opinion. A double digit of insulin level is nowhere near what it can become (bad type II's can get in the hundreds if their pancreas beta cells are still healthy), but it is an early warning level. She is most likely avoiding what would eventually turn into diabetes. I wish I would have had the knowledge I do now 40 years ago. I might not have been smart enough to use it back then, but I think it would have made a difference much earlier in my life rather than having to be almost 65 before I learned it.
I think eventually the cost of the monitors will come down. Based on cost of other electronics like cheap watches, etc, those sensors ought to cost about ten or twenty bucks so a cost of 30-40 a month, in my opinion.
I would like to be on one right now. It is not so much the cost as it is I don't think it would change anything in the way I am eating. Because I have already learned it the hard way. With a CGM you get instant feedback rather than having to learn about the foods and their effects through manual reading and watching experts (and trying to decide who to believe).
A CGM is kind of like a "lie detector test" for food.
