Subject: FAA medical for drone pesticide application?

Chebanse, IL.....

I've heard & read of a couple of presenters suggesting one needs an FAA 2nd class (or higher) medical to fly and apply pesticides with a drone. This would be in the St of Illinois. I assume it would need to be renewed annually for commercial uses. I'm familiar w/FAA physicals. I've had both 1st & 2nd class physicals in the past. I have no idea why a drone applicator pilot would need these. The "self-examination" method that FAA allows for light sport aircraft makes more sense for drone work.

However, after searching, I can't find that requirement in print. Can someone point it out to me?

If one is flying & applying to their own farms only, are all the commercial stipulations still required? A few yrs back I believe the FAA said even if you're using a drone for crop scouting on your own farm, you need a Part 107 rating. That seemed very hard to prove however. "Nope...I'm just taking pictures....".

If one doesn't need a commercial applicator license (IL Dept of Ag) to apply pesticides to your own farm, why would you need commercial ratings to apply by your own drone on your own crops?

Just asking.
